Supporting Global Development through Sustainable Tourism

Sustainability Training

While the use of the word “sustainability” is becoming more commonplace within the tourism industry, understanding exactly how it can be achieved remains a challenge. Solimar has developed training programs for businesses and destinations that wish to introduce sustainability practices into their daily operations—or become certified in a specific program.

Through our partnership with the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria, Solimar literally helped to define what it means to be sustainable in the travel industry. The GSTC Partnership launched the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria in October 2008. These criteria were designed to be the minimum standard that any tourism business should aspire to reach in order to protect and sustain the world’s natural and cultural resources while ensuring tourism meets its potential as a tool for poverty alleviation. Solimar has supported the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria Initiative from its inception in 2006 by providing technical expertise to develop the Criteria, handling intensive private sector outreach to measure the Criteria's utility, and managing the process to develop the Criteria's indicators.

Through our training program utilizing the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria, or based upon another certification program that you strive to achieve, Solimar can provide you with the foundational knowledge in sustainability management and help you build the skills to implement environmental best practices in your destination.
